![]() If the bags are being reused over and over for non-food items, the plastic zipper pull may come off but you’ll still be able to seal the bag. They form an air-tight seal and are microwave safe. ![]() They come in two sizes, small and medium and cost $1 for each box of 10 and eight bags, respectively. I like the easy way they open and close using a zipper pull and there’s enough plastic in them to prevent them from tearing easily. Besides protecting food in the freezer, I also use them to store craft supplies or other small items I want to keep from getting lost. Slide Seal freezer bags: I’ve always been very happy with the Slide Seal brand freezer bags. I’ve had the occasional dud in a package of these batteries but mostly they perform just as well as the ones you’d get from a jeweller. It’s easy and takes practically no time at all. Then just replace the battery and snap the backing back into place. I use a mini flat screwdriver like the kind found in eye glass repair kits (also sold at dollar stores) and carefully pry the back of the watch off by sticking the screwdriver in the opening by the watch stem and working it around the edges of the backing. I’ve been replacing my own watch batteries for years. The Sunbeam batteries come in two different sizes, 357 and 377. When you consider that a package of five Sunbeam watch batteries costs only $1 at Dollarama $10.50 seems a high price to pay, even with the year-long warranty thrown in. Watch batteries: At Sears, replacing a watch battery will cost you $10.50. Later that week, I saw the exact same cheese grater in a large department store that was selling for over $3. It runs on a replaceable button battery.A few years ago, when I first discovered dollar stores, I bought a four-sided metal cheese grater for a buck at Dollarama. It’s easy to use and can be sat on the counter, attached to the stove by way of a magnet or clipped to your apron pocket so you can check the laundry without fear of burning the chocolate chip cookies. That’s an electronic kitchen timer sitting there among the faux veggies. One of these things just doesn’t belong here. The package states that it’s not dishwasher safe either. ![]() I tried it out on a carrot and it sliced through that veggie quite easily. The only limitation this one has is that it should not be put in the dishwasher, the reason being that the glue holding the bristles to the handle won’t take the heat. One vegetable scrubber is as good as another. I’ve been using my carrot vegetable peeler for several months now and can attest to the fact that it works as well as any I have ever had. Hence the carrot vegetable peeler, the spud potato scrubber and wavy chopper with potato grip. If we must scrub peel and cut, we might as well have some fun with it. And whatever becomes popular will eventually find its way into dollar stores in some form or another. Silicone can take the heat, up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, that’s 260 degrees Celsius for the Canucks among us, which is why it’s become popular in the kitchen. Heres a selection of kitchen helpers from the dollar store that fit that description and are fun as well as useful. There are lots of fancy gizmos for your kitchen out there but, generally, its the little things that most of us rely on from day to day that keep dinner on track.
