Depending upon the player’s individual style and volume needs, most country players will agree that a great tube combo amp needs to be loud and clean. Some country guitarists also love the scrappy 50-watt Fender Bassman (opens in new tab) with four 10-inch speakers for raunchy overdrive and touch-sensitivity when its volume is pushed to the edge. Just like the Fender Telecaster, most classic country guitarists have favored an all-tube Fender combo amplifier with reverb paired with it.īecause Fender makes a wide range of amplifiers, many players can be seen with something as sweet and punchy as the 22-watt Fender Deluxe Reverb (opens in new tab) or as loud and cutting as the esteemed 85-watt Fender Twin Reverb (opens in new tab). Modern country is having a renaissance in its perceived sound, and with that, the guitars and gear most associated with country have certainly changed. PRS Guitars also has recently introduced the S2 Vela Semi-Hollow (opens in new tab), which combines an offset body shape and new pickups with a range that evokes the “twang” of a Tele as well as the punch of other solidbody guitars. In fact, if you look at today’s modern country players, they are using everything but a Telecaster.įor example, Jason Aldean’s guitarists, Jack Sizemore and Kurt Allison, have been spotted using Gibson Les Pauls and EVH Wolfgangs (opens in new tab), and even Nashville’s most preeminent session guitarist, Brent Mason, has his very own PRS Guitars Brent Mason (opens in new tab) signature guitar, while the great Albert Lee has a signature Ernie Ball Music Man (opens in new tab) model. However, not all country guitarists are using Teles. Throw in a kickass electric guitar solo, lyrics that anybody who grew up in a small southern town can relate to, and the badass vocals of Ronnie Dunn, and this may be the greatest redneck “bro-country” songs of all time. Finally, the guitar’s 25 1/2–inch scale length combined with a single-coil pickup on a steel bridge plate with brass saddles and strings routed through the back of the body all contribute to the harmonic sparkle and percussive snap - or “twang” - a Telecaster is known for producing.Īnd for those reasons and more, Fender produces several different Telecasters to accommodate any flavor of country or rock, with the new Fender American Performer Telecaster (opens in new tab) (pictured below) and the Fender Brad Paisley Road Worn Telecaster (opens in new tab) as two of my favorites. Many may label this song as an early example of “bro-country,” which is a very fair argument considering ol’ Ronnie and Kix sing about “slick pick up trucks,” “small towns,” “country girl cuddled up,” and “Saturday night,” but in comparison to the peak “bro-country” era of 20 (looking at you Florida Georgia Line), nobody can hold a candle to this. “Well, up in the backwoods, down in the holler I mean c’mon, you can recognize this intro from anywhere: Written by Brad Crisler and Craig Wiseman, “Hillbilly Deluxe” was the fourth single and the title-track of the duo’s 2005 album, which features other hits like “Play Something Country,” “Believe,” and more. I’ll admit, this song is bro-country to its core, ahead of its bro-country time, and in this rare instance, that’s what makes everything about this song great. However, I’ll never forget warming up in that outfield grass the summer of 2009 in Easley, South Carolina, when all of a sudden I heard a song that would truly open my eyes to how good country music is…Īnd it was no other than Brooks & Dunn’s “Hillbilly Deluxe.”Īt that moment, I knew I was at least gonna draw a walk or two and catch a flyball in right field that game. I’ll never forget playing in the Little League state baseball championship when I was 11-years-old, throwing long toss in the outfield and getting ready for the biggest (and still is the biggest) baseball game of my life.Īt that time, my playlist only consisted of Def Leppard, Boston (because the two rock bands didn’t really have tattoos or cuss in their music), and contemporary Christian music, so I’ll admit that my music catalog was not very diverse.
